Who am I….know yourself before you write.

I wanted to expand a little bit on the previous  blog I wrote, regarding Write what you know. Yes, writer what you know of course…how could you not…

If you don’t it’s  a pretty short fall to people, your readers,  realizing you don’t know what the hell your talking about.  BUT even if you have that base covered and you know what your talking about then you actually have to make what you say interesting.  You can’t  just spout the right words in the right order and make a sentence and hope that person on the receiving end of it all is interested in what your saying. Hey slap that kid in the back he’s dozing off.  SLAP..thanks

I found out  when I went to back to college and started studying literature and creative writing that people just dont know how boring they are to listen to when it comes to the written word.( it can carry over to normal conversation as well but not always)  I can’t tell you how many times I sat around in a huddle with my writing group and we’d all take turns reading a particular writer’s story and then proceed to give our own critique of it.

I always hated critiquing people’s work because I have this thing in my mind that likes to leap out and wreak havoc on the poor soul who wrote it.  Basically, that creature inside my head is honesty.  What made it worst for me was that the three people before me, giving the guy their own opinion , who read the  same exact boring  going nowhere piece of crap  story that I did, didn’t have the balls to step up and say “Hey buddy, see this part right here, yeah,   I don’t get it..or could you be a  little more descriptive..this isn’t a grocery list your writing here, hell a grocery list would have been more exciting…and look what you did there…what were you  thinking?”     SEE WHAT I DID? ..I totally just bombed this whole guy’s story and he thinks I’m a jerk.

Raise your hand if you have ever seen Amercian Idol, or some version of  such a show.  Stop me if I’m wrong but of the 70,000+ entrants maybe 200 have actual talent to go further. The rest of the 69,800 just have one thing…..courage.  Now where do they get that courage from?  From the same people like in my writing group who don’t know how to give an honest critique but instead pump them full of misguided praise, misinformation, or worse yet..just silence, leading the writer to think whatever hell they want to think. (which is usually oh I must be kinda good)

NOW here’s my point to all this blah blahing above. If those 69,800  others really really really really took a look at themseleves.  Reviewed their talent in all the clarity of a microscope, you would see would them BE BETTER. Some might not be Idol material but they would BE better when they went up to that mic. Because they would KNOW themselves.  KNOW what they need to work on, come prepared,  work at their craft. But they delude themselves and will continue to delude while someone pats their hands and tells them what they want to hear.

I soooooo  want people to tell me whats wrong with my work it hurts. (yes I occasionally  would like adulation from my adoring fans…bring it)

I want to get better…but I want to get better. For real better.

So as a writer I will always try to be true, to myself  and not short change myself. I  will do my best not to lie to myself…the truth will set you free they say. (will somebody get me out of this straight jacket)

My Free Download Campaign Success for my story Epublished Story Roadkill

Hello guys,

Wanted to personally thank any of my followers and readers who took advantage of the Free Download period for my epublshed book “Roadkill” this past weekend on Amazon….I thought it was a pretty successful campaign.  My goal was to let people see what I”m all about as a writer and get a little of exposure in the process.

Plus, I thought it would be a great segue into future stories that I will be coming out with. One will be called “A Fire to Extinguish”, a science fiction story about a caveman who may very well decide the fate of the planet himself. The second story is a Dark Urban Fantasy, called “The Grate“. It’s about a man who has literally fallen into a world of war and evil where he must play the reluctant hero or just die.

Look for these titles on here as excerpts and then on Amazon later in there complete epublished format…I hope to grow in the minds of people that I am a serious and more importantly good writer of Dark Fantasy and speculative fiction..here’s to many more great stories ahead…you can never have enough.

Thanks…..Philip Wardlow

Kurt Vonnegut 8 Basics of Writing

Kurt Vonnegut 8 Basics of Writing

Kurt Vonnegut created some of the most outrageously memorable novels of our time, such as Cat’s Cradle, Breakfast Of Champions, and Slaughterhouse Five. His work is a mesh of contradictions: both science fiction and literary, dark and funny, classic and counter-culture, warm-blooded and very cool. And it’s all completely unique.

With his customary wisdom and wit, Vonnegut put forth 8 basics of what he calls Creative Writing 101: *

  1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.
  2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.
  3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.
  4. Every sentence must do one of two things—reveal character or advance the action.
  5. Start as close to the end as possible.
  6. Be a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them—in order that the reader may see what they are made of.
  7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.
  8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.

The greatest American short story writer of my generation was Flannery O’Connor (1925-1964). She broke practically every one of my rules but the first. Great writers tend to do that.

* From the preface to Vonnegut’s short story collection Bagombo Snuff Box

“Roadkill” for FREE this weekend!

Roadkill Story on Amazon

FIRST thing I want to say is,  I am NOT  handing out  any dead skunks, raccoons.possums or any other such  dead creatures to you…

What I am going to make available to you for download is a great little dark story  for you to cozy up  to….

If you are new to my website you may not have realized that I Epublished a book to Amazon that sells for $2.99,  called you guest it, “Roadkill”.

If you look to the right of this article,  you will see a direct link to that story on Amazon’s website. You can also click here or above.

Starting TOMORROW on Friday, August 31st  through Sunday Sept 2 it will be available for FREE for anyone to download.

You don’t need a kindle to download it and read it but you will  probably need to download Amazon’s small Kindle app program for viewing on your PC before being able to download and read the story. Other than that it’s a piece of cake.

I personally don’t own a Kindle myself but I found you can, by using this simple downloadable software have access to  free or very very cheap entertaining stories or even full lengths  books through Amazon downloaded  to your computer permanently.

Amazon allows writers/epublishers to schedule up to a total of  five free days of free access to other Amazon users for download of their published works as part of their marketing program. I thought it would be a great idea for my followers  and anybody who finds me in the blogosphere to take a look at what I’m all about as a writer and hopefully pass my name along to friends and family.

I am at work on two other stories and a novel of which I wish to complete and put out there as epublished books  in addtion to turning them into publishers and contests for consideration.

So check it out… as long as nothing is glitchy over at Amazon you should be able download it tomorrow for free, and of course Saturday and Sunday.

And definitely let me know what you think of the story after you have finished reading it. It would be great if you gave me a review on Amazon as well.  You can find an excerpt here to get a feel for the story to see if its something you might be interested in.

If you like urban fantasy and a touch of horror entertwined with some suspense added in then you  just might like this little story.

Let’s Play what is your earlierst Human memory…Here’s mine.

I remember moving into our new house and there were curtains hanging over the front living room windows when we walked in.  My mom opened them up to let in more light into the room and two bats came flying out…it scared the shit out of my mom…but I thought it was the coolest thing…I was about four or five years old.

So fellow followers or readers of my great blog what is YOUR earliest memory. Please please please let me peak into your mind just a little….:)

Thanks

The Dark Tree – A Poem

It swayed and creaked in

the wind.

The black silken crows

gave a queer semblance of

life to the tree,

Its bare branches covered

with a multitude perched like

the clinging of leaves.

It swayed and it creaked

and spoke of its sins,

Dark feathers fluttered,

as if to  fool a passerby’s eye

that life still dwelt in the trees dead limbs.

None made a sound, not a caw

not a screech, no  utterance did they speak;

for you see they had  been given a task long ago,

to bear silent witness to the migration

of lost souls.

For no man,

should ever die alone.

So they perched and they preened

as the body swayed and creaked

on the rope below.

Update on My Writing Work…and how I found out what’s really important.

Hello one and all…first I want to thank all my followers  basically for still following me…:).

For the ones I follow I have loved reading your blogposts as well.  You might have noticed that I’m sure when I comment on  a blogpost that peaks my interests.  I’m usually one of the first ones to chime in on something you might have said if it catches my eye.

I have had a pretty sluggish month for posting to my blog.  My writing in general for my short stories for this month has been  sub-par you might say.  I will be wrapping up two short stories to display on here soon that I hope to send off to some publishers as well.  I wanted to also write a few personal anectdoal stories on here as well when time permits along with some Blogger award stuff I’ve been meaning to get to.

The main reason for my lack of posting is that my wife had to have a pretty major surgery which will have a long recovery time of about 6-8 weeks before she’s back to her normal self. ( When she gets back to full health she’ll be hitting me in no time….she likes to abuse me…:)

Anyways, I just thought I should let you know that. I don’t feel I owe an explanation to the souls in cyberspace I just felt like telling you for no particular reason other than that your all a small part of my life.

I also wanted to  express that I do have to thank my wife though for opening my eyes.

Often I stressed out when I felt I wasn’t  being productive enough in my writing. I felt less than if I didn’t meet the personal challenges I set forth for myself in my writing.

As I sat by my wife’s hospital bed  after her long 6hr  ordeal of a surgery I realized that I felt at peace. At peace because this is where I needed to be, where I wanted to be.  The proximity of her and knowing she was alive and starting to heal as she slept was all that I wanted in that moment. I didnt’t feel a compulsion for anything except for her to get better.

She’s home now and slowly getting better. I’m  taking care of her and everything else in life (like writing) seems insignificant.

My writing is important to me but I realized it will never be what she is to me, for you see, she is my muse in everything that I call this life and you have to take care of your muse …especially if your a writer  …right…:).

Thanks again!

Excelsior!

Collecting your Thoughts….a writers advice on one GOT TO HAVE IT TOOL as you write.

Tools…

You need Tools to build things, whether it’s a book case,  a bed, or a barn…you need tools for the job.  You can’t hit a nail with your fist. Besides hurting like hell you won’t get anywhere  execpt bloody and perhaps a visit to the  emergency room.

Writing is the same way; certain tools are needed.  For many who write I’m sure that comes as no surprise. Stephen King says he brings his whole tool box from the garage  when he writes because he’ll never know what he’ll need.

For me, words are like gold when I write.  When I’m writing, I’m constantly trying to find that perfect string  of words, that when put together right, form a picture of a place,  character, an emotion,  or an action that grabs hold of the reader’s mind and puts them there right into the story.

Going back to Stephen King, I found that he is one of the masters at doing that. He is very good at looking at something in real life and flipping it to some analogous turn of phrase that you instantly connect to in your mind. I often seek to emulate writers like him and others. I have found one TOOL (method)  gets me close to that type of good writing; being observant about what I see, hear, smell, touch, taste, and then following it up by cataloging that thought down somewhere….anywhere….the memo function on my phone, a notepad, dictation to the phone, a napkin, on my hand (yes I did that once) or even literally telling your signifcant other to remember “this” until I get home  so I can jot it down.

Some thoughts strike like lighting about something you experience and you DON’T want to lose it.  You may not use it in the current story you are working on but you will surely have need of it in the wee hours of the night when you are searching for that one turn of phrase that will bring it all home in that one paragraph that you are  having sooooo much trouble putting to bed.

Words are not cheap so don’t let the gold coins dribble through a hole in your pants pocket to be lost and forgotten.  It’s great to be able to go to a cache of magical words and phrases that  you have saved up and rummage  through it once in awhile and say, hey that would work in this part.

So keep  the gold mine open and productive. I supremely HATE it when I forget something that was the coolest thing ever thought of on the face of this Earth.

Below are few of my “golden” words you might say about every day observations in life.  Some are direct form my own brain, some may be stolen you might say from family members, friends, or even strangers that I heard making their own unique observations that didn’t even know they were being original when they said them.  Don’t worry it’s okay to steal phrases from others; some of the best words and phrases come from an author’s relationships with others (not talking plagerism of course).  Let me know what your thoughts on the tools you use when writing:

Black and white striped sock

looked like the ribcage of a

rat lying in the gutter.

******************************

Her skin hung on her bones like

a thin wrinkled suit on a hanger.

********************************

I called them bumbies, half bum, half zombie

because of their slow shuffling jerky walk

down the street in their tattered dirty clothes

**************************************

Somehow I feel I ‘m framed like a picture,

Bounded and contained, my limits  are set

at four corners, my face compressed

tight against the glass.

***************************************

I feel the sharpness of your eyes cut into

me keener than any blade could cut  the thinnest

hair in half.

**********************************

Btw the way did you notice how I picked a Phillips’s Screwdriver for my tool in the  title pic above…get it …because my name is Philip…he he he…..oh well..anyways..that’s my attempt at  very  obscure, very subtle  stupid humor…then I again it’s  not very humorous if I feel like I have to point it out to you guys…:)

Quote of the week…

When the world winds down may there always be someone there to wind it up…

by Philip Wardlow

What does a guy like me who writes Fantasy likes to do in his spare time when he has it?

 The Renaissance Fair of Course!

Yes that is me in the background  wearing that ridiculous fencing  get up and kicking the ass out of probably a seventeen year old kid while looking like an idiot with balloons on my head….but I won! I parried and thrusted like no bodies business.

The Renaissance Fair is every Fantasy writers dream! Right? C’mon Right..

Yes, I like the Renaissance Fair….so what! ….  And NO I do not wear tights and dress up with a sword at my side or wear chain mail and talk in a Medieval accent.  (even though I would secretly like to very much)

I do enjoy the atmosphere…it’s almost like you have stepped back into the past some 500-700 yrs ago… Except first you must plop down the  $ 19.95 admission price  just before you can cross the moat over the drawbridge and enter under the portcullis (through the gates). But just wait after that it gets better!

There’s entertainment galore! Archery, Throwing Axes,Fencing (as seen above), Jousting (not me but by actors, I wish),humorous skits, music and merriment, drinking,eating…..oh the food…I die for a big Turkey Leg in hand while I’m walking down the thorough fares of the town as the vendors hawk their wares (no I don’t want to buy any tights..now leave me the fuck alone…I mean fuck off my dear sir praythee well), or how about crossing a bridge and getting insulted by an ugly troll (is there any other kind) that lives underneath…..true.. scouts honor. No I did not punch him…the courts never proved  a thing.

One of the first things you run into if your lucky enough….WAIT what the hell am I saying?  If your UNLUCKY enough, is the MayPole Girls..I took this video myself as they accosted me as I walked by them…check the video out HERE. Needless to stay the experience was very disturbing…avoid them at all costs….just check out the very short video of them and you’ll see what I mean…creepy.  I got the hell out of that area after the video was taken. My family abandoned me..traitors!

I have only gone twice so far just starting in 2008.  I’m thinking of going next year if time and money  allows. I also may participate in the Archery Tournament that is held  there on occasion. I’m a pretty fair shot and I think I can hold my own.  If you end up one of the top Three Archers in the contest, the title of Ranger is bestowed upon you forever at the fair…yeah I’m a nerd like that.

All in all it’s a good time to be had.  Money well spent. I was lucky that both times we had went it had been a sunny gorgeous day because the Festival is open rain or shine. I highly recommend it if you are looking for something to do in the summer time. There are several Festivals such as these spread across various states which run usually from late June through September…here is their website of the one I went to in Holly,MI called The Michigan Renassaince Festival. Below are a few other pics from our little adventure back in time:

Knights Riding out to Present themselves to the Queen prior to the Joust
Lively band full of bag pipes, drums, and the merriment I was talking about
The Asshole of Troll who flings insults at you at the bridge..but he’s a good singer …for a Troll that is.

If you have ever gone to one of these I would like to hear about your own experiences good or bad. Sir Philip of the Crows bids you good day.
